Sam wins 2011 Race4Change MicroCredit Summit Competition

Sam Mitchell has won the Race4Change competition for a VIP trip to the 2011 Global Microcredit Summit in Spain. Well done Sam! This is with mom, Susan Kupferberg: you  did a good job, Susan!

I asked our winner to tell us a bit about his background in the microfinance movement, and this is what he said:

“I first got interested in microfinance during my freshman year of college.  I lived next door to MFI Connect’s Chris Temple, who introduced me to the concept of microfinance, and I was soon getting involved in as many ways as possible.

“I began to work with the MFI Connect team, and travelled with them to Kenya in the Spring of last year, for the Africa and Middle East Microcredit Summit (the pic above is with a football team from Kibera slum in Nairobi). After that, I was brought on as a director of the organisation.

“Summer 2010 was spent in Gurgaon, near Delhi in India, working for microfinance organisation EDA Capital Connect: an incredible experience. The first few weeks were all about preparing investment profiles for various Indian and Sri Lankan micro finance institutes, to present to potential investors at a large microfinance conference that was held in Delhi.

“I currently share a house with Chris Temple and Zach Ingrasci (of “Living on One Dollar” fame), and the guys are two of my best friends. As we are all so obsessed with microfinance and MFI Connect, it was unavoidable that I would end up in Spain somehow with them for the conference.

“I’m glad that Race4Change was able to provide a way for me to get there and will keep supporting the effort right to the rally’s last day. Thanks to Doctor Funk, and many thanks to Race4Change!”

If young men like Sam can go as far as working in Delhi for a summer on microfinance projects, you can surely spare $5 to help the poorest people to get a leg up in life. Donate here using your US cellphone or go to the donate page and share in whatever way is easiest for you. But do share! Everything goes to Africa – nothing to our rally!
